Volkswagen Beetle "Juiced Up" - augmented reality in advertising

Volkswagen is promoting the 2012 Beetle in Canada with an  advertising campaign incorporating augmented reality. VW Canada has released a dedicated app called "VWJuicedUP" that allows mobile device users to see Beetle Juiced Up animations when the device is pointed towards ads that have a black frame around them. The AR animations can be seen on gigantic billboards in Toronto's Dundas Square as well as on bus shelters in Vancouver and Toronto.

The animations themselves show the Beetle launching itself through billboards, jumping off a huge ramp that emerges from the side of a building and racing through a tunnel before smashing through a bus shelter.

The Juiced Up campaign was developed by Red Urban, Canada and produced by Pixelpusher. Animation and design were produced at Bully! Entertainment, Baltimore, filming was shot by director/editor Tyler Williams.

The augmented reality campaign can be seen in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal followed by an online digital campaign. The app can be downloaded for free at vwjuicedup.ca.

I've downloaded the app on my iPhone and tried it with a screenshot of a bus shelter and it is really amazing.
So is this the future of advertising?

"German Tuesday - Deutscher Dienstag" Part 10: Home, sweet home

Last time I was home in Germany I came across a print advert I really like. It gives you an impression of my hometown Bonn and its surroundings in a very fun way. The illustration was commissioned by local bank Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg and design agency Freund Werbeagentur GmbH.
The illustration was done by design group eboy who create re-usable pixel objects and take them to build complex and extensible artwork as well as toys.

The illustration was also used for a full wrap on buses.

A cover to play with - novum World of Graphic Design

As a regular reader of "novum - World of Graphic Design" not only do I look forward to the interesting articles, trends and showcases of amazing work but also to the cover design. For each issue there are different things to discover, from different papers, print finishing techniques or illustrations.

And with the current November issue they've done it again. In 48 000 print passes and with 140 cuts per issue, six differently colored covers were created without re-exposure of the printing plate. The result? A cover that can be shaped into geometric three-dimensional figures, and thus invites to play.  Just brilliant!! Here is a video of the process:

German Tuesday - Deutscher Dienstag: Flying the banner

We thought we'd seen everything of how to promote a product or company until we came across this amazing promotional concept by agency Jung van Matt/Neckar, Germany. Can you imagine just trying to sell this idea in the boardroom?

To promote their exhibition stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Eichborn - the publisher with the fly - prepared 200 flies with an ultra light banner.

The banner was attached with natural wax. After a short time the banner dropped off by itself and the flies were not harmed.

Even though we do not endorse the use of any living creatures in any promotional or advertising, however we have this great idea using sharks...

Fun Friday - Trick or Treat?

With Halloween looming around the corner it's time to have a look what impact it had on advertising in the past years. Below are a few examples of print and TV ads.

"Trick or Treat"

"The beer drunk most on Halloween."

"BOO AT THE ZOO.
San Francisco's spookiest Halloween party
returns October 31st"

Ford Environmental Conservation Award

Launched in 1996 the Ford Environmental Conservation Award is a joint initiative between Ford Motor Company Brazil and Conservação Internacional Brazil that encourages and recognises projects that
protect nature and biodiversity.

To communicate the 15th edition of the Ford Environmental Conservation Award, JWT Brazil developed a really nice creative campaign with the tagline "Those who help nature end up helping themselves."

Even though body painting is not a new idea in advertising I love the concept of it. It is impactful and the colours really make it stand out. That shows that sometimes simpler is definitely more.

On Design
"In most people's vocabularies, design means veneer. It's interior decorating. It's the fabric of the curtains and the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service."
Fortune magazine 2000

On Work
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."
Stanford commencement speech 2005
